Our Hundred Days in Europe Oliver Wendell Holmes 9781117661650 Books
I have lived many, many years and have never readanything by Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. In 1833
he travelled to Paris to study medicine under famous
physicians-France was way ahead of the U. S. in
health care and many physicians in the US travelled
to Paris to learn new techniques. David McCullough,s
new book, the Greater Journey about Paris in the early
to mid 1800's has a wealth of information and much
about Dr. Holmes. Fifty years later in the early
1880's he decided he wanted to vi sit Paris and England
one more time. His daughter, Amelie accommpanied him.
Now this is the ear ly 1880's and he is amazed at the
changes in medicine, inventions and discoveries that
have come about after he left Paris the first time.
This book is much about his rambling around in his old
famliar places; seeing, visiting people; some very
famous. He decided he wanted to meet Dr. Louis Pasteur
but he had no card to present to him so he just wrote
him a note and said he would like to meet him; look
in his face and shake his hand as Pasteur was one of
the greatest physicians ever. This book is very easy
to read; it's as if he were telling you or me what
he,s doing each day and the marvels he sees. I would
love reading all of his writings but unfortunately I
do not have time left to do it on this earth.
By the way Dr. Hollmes wrote a parody on the Boston
Tea Party that is absolutely hilarious.
